Crowns and bridges are oral prosthetics that repair damaged, decaying, or missing teeth. They serve two purposes:
Crowns are custom manufactured coverings that support a fractured or severely decaying tooth. Once bonded in place, they cover the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line. Crowns restore your tooth to its near original shape and size, allowing you to bite and chew confidently.
Bridges are restorations that repair a gap in your smile. By filling the space, you can significantly lower the risk of gum recession, bone loss, and loose teeth. At Comfort Dentistry, Dr. Agrawal offers several types of dental bridges, including traditional, Maryland, cantilever, and implant-retained.
At Comfort Dentistry, getting crowns and bridges typically takes two appointments. During your initial consultation, Dr. Agrawal conducts an oral exam and takes a series of X-rays.
If you need a crown, Dr. Agrawal administers a local anesthetic and carefully removes the decaying or damaged portion of the tooth. Then, she takes a series of impressions. Dr. Agrawal sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures a custom crown.
If you need a bridge, Dr. Agrawal administers a local anesthetic and prepares your teeth on either side of the gap in your smile. To do this, she removes a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides of each tooth. Then, she takes impressions and sends them to a dental laboratory. The dental laboratory uses your impressions to make a custom bridge.
A week or two later, you return to Comfort Dentistry. Dr. Agrawal positions your crown or bridge and bonds it in place. Then, she assesses your bite, polishes your teeth, and provides care instructions.
Crowns and bridges typically last 10-15 years and sometimes even longer. To keep your dental restorations in optimal condition, brush and floss regularly and visit Comfort Dentistry at least twice a year.
To prevent damage to your crown or bridge, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, chewing on ice, or opening objects with your teeth. If you play contact sports or grind your teeth, consider wearing a mouthguard.
